The department of statistics at The George Washington University celebrated its 75th anniversary this year and inaugurated a graduate certificate program on applied quantitative risk analysis.

Risk analysis has moved to the forefront of study as managers, analysts, and executives in both the public and private sectors are increasingly asked to devise strategies and implement decision tools for the mitigation of risk.

During the last decade, we have felt the intensity and impact of natural and man-made disasters such as 9/11, Katrina, global economic meltdown, and the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. This new graduate certificate program addresses these challenges with a curriculum that focuses on the foundational issues and the critical analyses of relevant case studies.

The complete program consists of four courses. Two foundational courses designed by Nozer Singpurwalla provide comprehensive background in probabilistic models, statistical inference, and essentials of risk analysis. The remaining two courses focus on applications of risk analysis in different domains, such as case studies built around financial and insurance markets, safe energy sources and environment, homeland security, health delivery systems, and natural disasters.
