A special issue of the Journal of the Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics (JISAS) features a festschrift for Prem Narain, who is celebrating his 75th birthday.

Narain holds PhD and DSc degrees from Edinburgh University, United Kingdom. He has worked mostly at the Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute (IASRI) in New Delhi, serving as its director from 1981–1992. Since his retirement in 1994 as dean and joint director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (popularly known as Pusa Institute) and a five-year stint as professor emeritus, he has been a freelance researcher.

Narain’s principal research interest is in statistical aspects of genetics and genomics. He has published more than 300 articles and authored several books, the most notable being Statistical Genetics, published in 1990. Narain is a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi; Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore; and National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, and a founder fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi. He is a past council member and president of the International Biometric Society (Indian Region) and a past council member of the International Statistical Institute. He has been a member of the American Statistical Association since 1993.

Narain has been associated with the Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics since 1961 and currently serves as executive president. The society publishes JISAS three times per year, including original research in statistics and its applications to agriculture.
