Authors Praise Series Publishing Process

1 December 2011 6,679 views No Comment

The editors of the ASA-SIAM Series on Statistics and Applied Probability recognize that when potential authors are thinking about writing a book, there are many factors to consider. Will it be a worthwhile expenditure of time? How will your contribution advance the study of the field? Will you be pleased with the outcome? That’s why we work closely with our authors to ensure the whole process is as easy as possible.

We recently asked some of our established authors their thoughts about having published in the series. We discovered they were pleased with many aspects of the process.

Review Process

Every book proposal is peer reviewed so we can decide whether we are a suitable publisher for the project; however, if a manuscript isn’t available at the proposal stage, we also conduct a final manuscript review that provides suggestions for fine-tuning the book.

“I thought that the manuscript review process was very helpful. The reviewers of the book proposal gave many constructive comments. Later, when a draft of the entire book was completed, reviewers gave more comments that improved the final manuscript.”
— Tom O’Gorman

The Editorial Process

Copy editing is a valuable benefit SIAM provides for all our authors. Our experienced copy editors ensure consistent formatting, and they tackle grammar, punctuation, and typos with ease. Their work won’t change your voice or writing style, and you’ll get to see and approve all changes at first proofs.

“The editorial staff is helpful without being overbearing.” — Herbie Lee

Support of Ancillaries

Many authors provide supplemental material such as data sets or computer code that readers can use on their own. We routinely establish web pages for this purpose, and we can host the material or redirect our URL to the authors’ home site.

“Publishing in the ASA-SIAM series was a very positive experience from support of content through promotion and marketing. We especially appreciate SIAM for maintaining the SAS programs and Excel spreadsheets we had written to accompany the book.” — Richard K. Burdick, Connie M. Borror, and Douglas C. Montgomery

We’re Here to Help

Whether you have questions related to content, editing, or formatting, our staff members are here to help you. You will know each other by name, and your questions will be answered in a timely manner. We recognize some authors may need additional support based on their unique situation or expectations and we work hard to satisfy any requests to make publishing in the ASA-SIAM series an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

“Our ANOM book was started by Peter Nelson and Peter Wludyka, but was completed by Peter W. and me after Peter N. died. The editor-in-chief of the ASA-SIAM series, who had worked with and known Peter N. longer than we had, helped us fill the gaps left in the text and make the final edits, and he mentored us through the completion of the book. The experience was a positive collaboration between authors and a series editor to publish a book to serve the ASA members, and it was possible due to the series and the society.” — Karen A. F. Copeland

Let’s collaborate on your next (or first) book project so we can advance the fields of statistics and applied probability with well-written books for varied audiences. Contact Series Acquisitions Editor Sara J. Murphy at murphy@siam.org for information about starting the book proposal process.
