NIJ, NSF Create Partnership

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and National Science Foundation (NSF) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that establishes a framework for a partnership to leverage their respective strengths and resources. This MOU applies specifically to the social, behavioral, and forensic sciences as these relate to the juvenile and criminal justice systems. NIJ and NSF have overlapping interests in a number of areas and hope to expand their partnership in the future.

Under this MOU, the two agencies will coordinate workshops and other educational and networking opportunities for their staffs and for researchers and practitioners in the field. The partners are working out arrangements to share resources for funding opportunities. For example, if one agency cannot provide sufficient funding for an outstanding proposal, the other agency may be interested in a joint funding arrangement so the government’s dollars can go further. Or, if a proposal is not quite suitable for one agency, the researcher may be asked to resubmit it to the other agency.
