The department of statistics and Center for Statistical Analysis at Temple University hosted a one-day conference on April 12 to celebrate the International Year of Statistics.

The theme of the conference was “High-Dimensional Statistics,” and the program included eight invited talks grouped into the following four sessions and given by leading international researchers in the field:

High-Dimensional Statistical Inference
Chair: Stan Altan, Johnson & Johnson
Speakers: Jianqinq Fan, Princeton University, and Liza Levina, University of Michigan

Spatio-Temporal Data Applications
Chair: Kris Ghosh, Covance
Speakers: Sudipto Banerjee, University of Minnesota, and Zoran Obradovic, Temple University

Computational Algorithms for High-Dimensional Data
Chair: Joseph Heyse, Merck Research Laboratories
Speakers: Edward George, University of Pennsylvania, and Diane Lambert, Google

Genomics Applications
Chair: Eric Ross, Fox Chase Cancer Center
Speakers: Mark van der Laan, University of California at Berkeley, and John Storey, Princeton University

Each chair earned his or her PhD from the Temple University. The keynote speaker was Sastry G. Pantula, past president of the American Statistical Association. Opening remarks were given by the provost and senior vice-president for academic affairs, Hai-Lung Dai, and the introduction was given by the dean of the Fox School of Business, Moshe Porat.

The conference brought together about 120 scientists from statistics, medicine, engineering, computer science, and business applications. There was also a poster session for junior researchers and graduate students.
