ASA San Antonio Chapter president, Jesus Cuellar Fuentes (right), presents the Don Owen Award to Nitis Mukhopdhyay April 10 for his outstanding contributions to research, statistical consultation, and service to the statistical community.

The 2015 Don Owen Award, given by the ASA San Antonio Chapter, was presented to Nitis Mukhopdhyay by chapter president Jesus Cuellar Fuentes April 10 at the Conference of Texas Statisticians.

Mukhopdhyay is a professor in the department of statistics at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. He earned his doctorate from the Indian Statistical Institute in 1975, and then taught for six years in the department of statistics at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. He joined the University of Connecticut in 1985.

Mukhopdhyay has authored six books, 14 book chapters, and more than 215 refereed research articles. His research includes sequential analysis and multistage sampling and selection and ranking.

He has supported the ASA’s missions through his commitment to preserving and celebrating statistical history. He was a project director for the Distinguished Statisticians film series for more than 20 years and the author of many interviews appearing in Statistical Science.

Mukhopdhyay has been invited to deliver major talks at numerous professional meetings and seminars. He has taught courses on a variety of topics and guided numerous master’s and PhD students. He also served as editor-in-chief of Sequential Analysis and associate editor and editorial advisory board member for several other statistics journals.

The Don Owen Award is presented annually by the ASA San Antonio Chapter and sponsored by the Taylor and Francis Group.
