The Statistical Education Section had a productive JSM 2016 under Section Program Chair Pat Humphrey, sponsoring or co-sponsoring six invited panels/sessions, seven topic-contributed panels/sessions, eight contributed paper sessions, one traditional poster session, one speed poster session, and 11 roundtables.

Additionally, the following six section members were named as new ASA fellows:

  • Christopher Bilder, University of Nebraska
  • Wenyaw Chan, The University of Texas
  • Tim Jacobbe, University of Florida
  • V.A. Samaranayake, Missouri University of Science and Technology
  • Michael Sinclair, Mathematica Policy Research
  • Rochelle Tractenberg, Georgetown University

The section also announced the following education award honorees at JSM:

  • Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel of Duke University: Waller Education Award
  • Allan J. Rossman of Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo: Waller Distinguished Teaching Career Award
  • Mark Daniel Ward of Purdue University: National Mu Sigma Rho 2016 William D. Warde Statistical Education Award
  • Onyebuchi A. Arah of UCLA and Arvid Sjölander of Karolinska Institut: Causality in Statistics Education Award
  • Eric Hare of Iowa State University: Ron Wasserstein Best Contributed Paper Award for his presentation at JSM 2015, “IntRo: Software for Introductory Statistics”
  • Ellen Gundlach, K. Andrew, R. Richards, Chantal Levesque-Bristol, and David Nelson: Jacqueline Dietz Award for the Best Journal of Statistics Education Paper for their presentation at JSM 2015, “A Comparison of Student Attitudes, Statistical Reasoning, Performance, and Perceptions for Web-Augmented Traditional, Fully Online, and Flipped Sections of a Statistical Literacy Class”

Additionally, the following ASA initiatives and recent actions of possible interest to section members were discussed at the open meeting:

  • The revised GAISE College Report was endorsed by the ASA at JSM 2016.
  • The Statistical Commons website—a repository for sharing course materials such as lecture slides, exams, and data sets—is now accessible to all ASA nonstudent members. The working cheap ativan valium group responsible for creating the website included section members David Banks (chair), Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel, Nick Horton, Donna LaLonde, Kari Lock Morgan, Bill Notz, Rebecca Nugent, Chris Paciorek, Victoria Stoddard, and Mark Ward. Everyone is invited to contribute materials to the website.
  • A group of undergraduate faculty, headed by Dick DeVeaux of Williams College, is drafting guidelines for programs of study for undergraduate data science majors. The group of 24 undergraduate faculty, 12 mathematicians, six statisticians, and six computer scientists met for three weeks at the Park City Mathematics Institute in Midway, Utah, in July. A draft of the guidelines is expected to be ready for comments later this month. If you would like to read and/or comment on a draft, contact DeVeaux.
  • The section is organizing a pilot mentoring program for our members in which we will connect early career statistical educators with experienced mentors. We hope to match mentors and mentees based on a number of criteria—including career interests, geographical location, and research area—with the goal of matching at least one of these areas. If you would like to be mentored, serve as a mentor, or serve on the mentoring organizational committee, contact Nick Horton or Tena Katsaonis.

Dalene Stangl will chair the section’s 2017 JSM program, with Kelly McConville serving as the 2018 JSM program chair.
