Student members of The University of Alabama ASA Student Chapter attend “A Night at the Ballpark” at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

The University of Alabama (UA) ASA Student Chapter hosted a two-part event that included a seminar on sabermetrics (baseball statistics) and “A Night at the Ballpark” April 14 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Approximately 25 ASA members, including faculty, attended.

UA’s James Cochran and UA ASA Student Chapter executive assistant, Matt Hall, presented “Do Pitchers Differ on Batting Average on Balls in Play or Defense Independent Slugging Percentage?”

Participants learned the fundamentals of America’s greatest pastime and how statistics is transforming baseball.

Leveraging historical and real-time baseball data helps teams make informative decisions about team starting line-ups, recruiting, pitcher/batter match-ups, prediction of players’ contribution to team performance, etc. The discussion raised students’ awareness of a new applied field of statistical research and created a few new baseball enthusiasts.

Members also experienced a live viewing of The University of Alabama Crimson Tide versus the Texas A&M University Aggies baseball game at Sewell-Thomas Stadium, where fellowship, baseball talk, and statistics were highlights.
