Significance Highlights: December Issue Covers Thorny Issues

2 January 2019 648 views No Comment

The December 2018 issue of Significance is out in digital format. In this issue, we explore the thorny topic of data ethics. Big data is gradually revealing its potential to both help and harm us. But the rights and wrongs of what to do about this are hard to pin down, so Robert Langkjær‐Bain looks at the work underway to ensure the data revolution does not leave ethics behind.

Next, we turn our attention to the risk of extreme floods in England and Wales. In past winters, flooding has caused billions of pounds of damage, and though governments, emergency services, and homeowners might like to think—and hope—such extreme events are rare, statisticians have shown they are likely to occur more frequently than expected.

Also in this issue:

  • Michael Spagat, Britta Jewell, and Nicholas Jewell explain why President Donald Trump is not alone in mistaking death “estimates” for death “counts.”
  • Kingsley Purdam, Elisabeth Garratt, and Graham Whitham dig into the pros and cons of a new UK poverty measure.
  • Graham Kendall uses computer simulation to test whether a roulette system can really “break the bank.”
  • Blakeley B. McShane and Ulf Böckenholt describe a statistical tool to make behavioral research more replicable.
