The Sri Lankan Journal of Applied Statistics (SLJAS), published by the Institute of Applied Statistics in Sri Lanka, welcomes critical reviews, including conceptual discussions, opinions, and book reviews.

The ASA and more than 1,400 organizations in 109 countries last month kicked off the International Year of Statistics (Statistics2013), a worldwide initiative promoting the contributions of the statistics field to finding solutions to global challenges.

Statisticians work in a vast array of fields—advancing science; creating new methodology; providing information that shapes public policy; improving business practices and enhancing production quality; making our medicines more effective, our food safer, and our planet better; and so much more. Statisticians come from many cultures, speak many languages, and arrive at statistics as their profession through many paths. But at least one aspect is recognized by virtually every statistician: Our discipline and profession is simply not visible enough.

The Statistics and Probability African Society (SPAS) is now official. The main objective of SPAS is to contribute to the development of random methods (statistics and probability theory) at both the African and international levels by promoting fundamental and applied research and training. The society also emphasizes participation in Africa’s development challenges.

A five-acre plot on the campus of the University of Hyderabad is the future home of Sankhya: The National Museum of Statistics. Planners say it will be the first of its kind in the world. It is being designed to showcase the history of statistics; statistics’ early applications for data relating to people and the state, for administrative purposes; and the emergence of statistics as a method for solving problems in all areas of human endeavor.
