First-place winners received $300, a certificate, and grade-appropriate graphing calculators for the students and advisers provided by Texas Instruments. Second-place winners received $200 and a certificate; third-place winners received $100 and a certificate; and honorable mentions received certificates.

Madhumita (Bonnie) Ghosh-Dastidar, a senior statistician at the nonprofit RAND Corporation and head of the RAND Statistics Group, was elected the 119th president of the American Statistical Association. She will be the first Asian-American female president and second Asian-American president.

Congress wrapped up its funding for the federal government for fiscal year 2022 in March, the sixth month of the fiscal year. With the Biden administration releasing its fiscal year 2023 within a few weeks, Congress had to almost immediately start the process again. The National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation both received 4 percent increases. Several statistical agencies also received 3–6 percent increases.

These accomplished women were chosen because they are leaders, mentors, and influencers. In celebration of Black History Month, we recognize the innovative mathematical statistician Annie T. Randall, along with 11 individuals from the Black/African American collective who have made tremendous contributions to the statistics field. The 12 featured individuals have achieved success as professors, researchers, volunteers, and health care professionals.

The International Prize in Statistics—one of the highest honors in statistics—is awarded every two years to an individual or team “for major achievements using statistics to advance science, technology, and human welfare.”

In the latest feature examining the state of the US data infrastructure, the Count on Stats team spoke with three experts on the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Katharine Abraham was BLS commissioner from 1993–2001, and Erica Groshen was BLS commissioner from 2013–2017. Ken Poole is the chief executive officer of the Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness and longtime and widely recognized leader in the BLS data user community.

The class of 2020 graduated into uncertain times and a job market deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, the statistics and biostatistics master’s graduates in the job market who responded to the ASA follow-up survey seem to have landed on their feet.
