The ASA’s Section on Statistics in Defense and National Security is co-sponsoring the Defense and Aerospace Test and Analysis Workshop April 16–18, which will take place both virtually and in person at the Institute for Defense Analysis in Alexandria, Virginia.

Thomas Mathew, ASA Fellow and professor of statistics in the department of mathematics and statistics at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, gave a talk on tolerance intervals and regions.

Scott Vander Wiel and Janet Myhre have been honored with the section’s Distinguished Achievement Award for 2020 and 2021. The award recognizes an outstanding accomplishment or sustained contribution at the intersection of the statistical profession and national defense.

As part of the section’s speaker program, Laura Freeman traveled to the United States Military Academy at West Point to brief staff and faculty on statistical methods in test and evaluation within the Department of Defense.

SDNS is soliciting entries for a student researcher paper competition for the 2020 Joint Statistical Meetings.

The ASA’s Section on Statistics in Defense and National Security sponsored an inaugural Defense and Aerospace Test and Analysis Workshop (DATAWorks) March 20–22. Analysts from across the Department of Defense and NASA met with leading academics, shared best practices, and gained new ideas.

The Section on Statistics in Defense and National Security sponsored the student poster prize session at the Conference on Data Analysis. There were 28 students presenting posters, and three prizes were awarded.

Alyson Wilson, a professor in the department of statistics at North Carolina State University, spoke about her work on assessing system reliability for complex U.S. Department of Defense systems and the application of data science to problems in the intelligence community at Smith College on March 31 as part of the Statistics in National Defense and Security Speakers Program.
