About Emily
I grew up in Tallahassee, Florida. My first statistics class was AP Statistics, and I took it so I could avoid taking a “real” math class my senior year in high school. In college, I took a statistics class my very first semester (so I could continue to avoid math). Unfortunately for my plan to avoid math, I fell in love with statistics and ended up finishing college with a degree in statistics, a minor in math, and an acceptance letter into graduate school.

After earning my PhD in statistics, I completed a postdoc at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and then worked as a survey statistician for the FBI before returning to North Carolina State University (NCSU) as a faculty member. The best thing about being a statistician is our wide array of career options.

I was drawn to statistics because our field helps people in other fields learn new things and improve their research methods. I enjoy working with scientists and researchers in other fields, using statistical techniques to answer their big questions. I have also enjoyed becoming more involved with the North Carolina Chapter of the ASA and am serving as president this year.

A recent accomplishment was being named the director of our Statistical Consulting Core at NCSU in the fall of 2017. It has been an exciting step in my career. Having a firm foundation in the process of data analysis has helped me learn to be an administrator. Asking lots of questions and taking time to think about things is important in working with numbers and with people.
