Last year, the White House released the 2022 National Strategy that outlined our nation’s top interests. Included on the list are climate change, investing in high-quality education and training in STEM fields, and attracting and retaining the world’s best STEM talent to make advances in technology—from AI to vaccines.

So how does the ASA fit in?

To achieve these goals, we need better statistics and data science education, and we need to inspire more students to pursue careers in these fields. Having enough well-trained statisticians and data scientists is key to solving some of the world’s most critical issues, including climate change, infectious disease, poverty, and food insecurity. Specifically, the ASA is doing the following:

• Improving statistics education at all levels through teacher training and workshops, free resources, classroom projects and competitions for student engagement, networking opportunities, and guidelines for assessment and instruction of statistics through the college level.
• Cultivating the next generation of leaders in statisticians and data science through providing scholarship opportunities; travel awards to attend ASA meetings and conferences; mentoring; and opportunities to hone leadership skills through involvement in student chapters, committees, and contests such as the ASA Leadership Challenge. The ASA also provides professional development opportunities at any career stage through ASA Leadership Institute initiatives like StatsForward.
• Advocating for sound policymaking by educating and providing resources to policymakers, defending the federal statistical agencies, and raising awareness of important issues affecting the practice and profession of statistics.
• Showcasing the contributions statisticians and data scientists make to science and society through programs like ThisIsStatistics. Through the IDEA forum, the ASA is bringing together statisticians, leaders, and policymakers to create solutions for problems facing the world community such as climate change.
