Cynthia Clark’s mother was a chemist prior to WWII and her father was an agricultural loan officer and bank director, so studying mathematics and science was not unusual for a girl in her home. She pursued mathematics until it was clear to her there were better career opportunities in statistics for a woman. A longtime leader in the official statistics community, she is the executive director of the Council of Professional Associations on Federal Statistics.

Royal Statistical Society Awards Guy Medal in Gold to Rao
The Royal Statistical Society presented the Guy Medal in Gold to Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao on June 29. Rao also was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka.

Astrostatistics Committee Initiated
The International Statistical Institute (ISI) Council recently approved the creation of the first standing astrostatistics committee by a recognized statistical or astronomical organization. It also approved the ISI Astrostatistics Network, the first global association of astrostatisticians.
