In the February issue of Amstat News, John Bailer and others described an initiative undertaken in 2012 “to develop guidelines, framed as learning outcomes, for master’s degree programs in statistics and biostatistics that are responsive to the needs of stakeholders who employ such graduates.” Read about the recommendations from the group that were adopted by the ASA Board.

The ASA Workgroup on Master’s Degrees submitted its report to the ASA Board of Directors in November. This committee was charged with developing guidelines, framed as learning outcomes, for master’s degree programs in statistics and biostatistics that are responsive to the needs of stakeholders who employ such graduates. This is what the workgroup learned.

Workgroup Offers Ideas for Growing Membership

What should the ASA do or offer to serve the world’s largest community of statisticians? The Membership Growth Workgroup advocates a multi-pronged approach to connecting with specific groups within the statistical community. The first set of recommendations and endorsements are aimed at young statisticians; the other sets are aimed at lapsed members, industry statisticians, and government statisticians.

That was one of the challenges presented to the 2010 Public Awareness Workgroup at JSM 2009. One year, three surveys, many meetings, hundreds of emails, and thousands of words later, the challenge was met.
