Our three SPES-sponsored roundtables highlighted a breadth of topics, from renewable energy to optimization of designed experiments to analysis of 2- and 3-d orientation data. The hosts came from all areas: industry (Alexander Kolovos of SAS Institute), academia (Dan Nordman of Iowa State), and the national laboratory world (Christine Anderson-Cook of Los Alamos National Laboratory).

Invited and Contributed Program
The Vancouver venue had spectacular views and many “green” features, including a “living” roof of indigenous plants and beehives. Additionally, SPES was the primary sponsor for three invited sessions, three invited posters, seven contributed sessions, and eight contributed posters. Presentations included traditional SPES topics such as design of experiments and reliability, as well as more current topics, including functional analysis, computational experiments, and parallel computing motivated by applications in the physical and engineering sciences. Awards were given for the best contributed posters at the traditional Tuesday evening joint SPES/Q&P mixer.
Executive Committee Meeting
The annual meeting of the SPES executive committee took place the morning of August 3. The SPES budget continues to be well in the black. While dues have declined, revenue from continuing education courses has been good. The executive committee would like to allocate funds to improve recruitment and retention of members and is open to suggestions for effective spending.
Randy Tobias, SPES webmaster, has received budget approval to redesign the SPES site in 2011. He plans to give it a more modern look and feel and make it more user friendly.
The Marquardt Industrial Speakers Program sponsors speakers from industry to give talks to those in academia. Jennifer Van Mullekom, 2011–2012 Marquardt chair, hopes to revitalize this program in 2011. JSM 2011 Sessions
We are already looking forward to a strong invited program for JSM 2011 in Miami Beach, Florida. Kerby Shedden of the University of Michigan is organizing a chemometrics session about chemical informatics and chemical biology. Xinwei Deng of the University of Wisconsin-Madison created a session called Efficient Data Collection Techniques for Cutting-Edge Applications, and Elizabeth Martinez-Gomez of Penn State has put together a session called A Universe of Challenges: Development, Application, and Testing of Statistical Methods in Astronomy and Beyond.
However, we need topics and speakers for topic-contributed and contributed sessions. Abstracts must be submitted online from December 1, 2010, to February 1, 2011.
