Gabriela de Queiroz is originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her career path has not followed a straight line. She studied electrical engineering in college but fell in love with statistics after spending a semester in the US, where she observed the power of numbers and statistics in the news. Upon returning to Brazil, she switched majors to statistics. She did not graduate from college until her late 20s, and then she completed a master’s in epidemiology at Oswaldo Cruz Foundation and another one (this time in the US) in statistics at California State University, East Bay.

de Queiroz then became a data scientist, intrigued by how statistics and computer science were being used together in the industry. She worked at several start-ups, where she built teams, developed statistical models, and employed a variety of techniques to derive insights and drive data-centric decisions. She now works at IBM, leading and managing a group of developers who work on open source projects related to data and artificial intelligence.

One of de Queiroz’s passions is sharing her knowledge and connecting with people. She spends a large amount of time speaking at conferences and mentoring others. An achievement that makes her proud is the creation of R-Ladies, a group that focuses on bringing more diversity into the R community by hosting workshops and offering community to people across the globe. R-Ladies has chapters in hundreds of cities around the world, bringing people together and promoting R.

More recently, de Queiroz started AI Inclusive, whose mission is to increase the representation and participation of gender minority groups in artificial intelligence.
