You are invited to join us in a Special Joint Statistical Meeting Invited panel, JSM No. 569, featuring “Innovative AI, Statistics, GIS, and *Data* – Unique Government, Academia, and Industry Partnership (PDI)” and showcasing the inaugural ASA/IMS/AMA/MAA/ACM/SIAM Science and Technology Policy Fellowship (STPF). It is organized by the ASA Committee of Representatives to AAAS, co-sponsored by the IMS, and American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). It will take place at the Joint Statistical Meetings at 3:00pm on August 6, the very last virtual session at JSM 2020!
Synopsis: Regardless of politics, data being small or gigantic, food is one of the most critical, basic needs in the Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs. By the year 2050, the world’s population could exceed 9.5 billion, increasing food demands by as much as 60 percent. Human activities and needs are already utilizing resources at unsustainable rates and creating inadvertent environmental and health issues. Developing a Sustainable Agriculture and Food System (AFS) that will also cut the Agriculture footprints while increasing the production, tops the global innovation agenda. Sustainable AFS is hugely critical in this ONE health, connected world, as evidenced by COVID19!
The ARS Office of National Programs (ONP) at the USDA is leading a once-in-a-lifetime massive data innovation project, Partnerships for Data Innovations (PDI), that has impacted how the research is done at the USDA and set a footprint for other agencies and industries to follow. PDI structurally leads the data science for big data in many different ways, as stated by the President of ESRI in his presentation of a “Special Achievement in GIS Award” to USDA ARS. PDI AgCros, SCInet and Ag Data Commons is becoming the hub of all scientific and observational data collected for centuries and in the future by the USDA.
Thanks to the prestigious, inaugural ASA/ACM/AMS/IMS/MAA/SIAM Science and Technology Policy Fellowship, co-sponsored by the AAAS, this session will focus on the very theme of JSM 2020, the “Data for the Public Good.” It brings together the following distinguished experts from Government, industries, and university to discusses the challenges (some parallel to that of EHRs and census data), eye-opening advances, thoughts to ponder, and great opportunities in our big data project and food and agricultural research. It will also spotlight some wonders from the ASA/IMS/AMA/MAA/ACM/SIAM Science and Technology Policy Fellowship (STPF).

- Sarah Beebout, National Program Leader for Sustainable Agriculture at USDA ARS on “Food Sustainability and USDA human-centered research.”
- Ranveer Chandra, Chief Scientist, Microsoft Azure Global on “Spectrum – TV White Space and AI in Agriculture (Farm Wave).”
- Nick Short, ESRI, USDA Team Lead, on “GIS and AI for Spatial, Temporal Data and Images.”
- Jiayang Sun, an inaugural ASA/ACM/AMS/IMS/MAA/SIAM Science and Technology Policy fellow, senior fellow at USDA ARS ONP, big data strategic lead, Professor and Bernard Dunn Eminent Scholar and Chair at GMU statistics on “Statistical Challenges and Statistical Strategic Areas for Agriculture, Connections to Research in Medical Sciences, Some Solutions as well as some highlights from the AAAS programs for the STPF.”
