This month, we spotlight new member Ian Lane, who answered the following questions so we could get to know him better:
How did you become interested in statistics and/or data science?
I am a nurse and—as I realized how important it was to read the scientific literature in health care to keep abreast of new knowledge—I began to see people sort of skim or jump over the methodology sections entirely. I tried to read them but could never grasp what I was seeing, so became determined to familiarize myself with the language of research design and then analysis. My first foray into statistics was before graduate school, trying to make sense of these otherwise incomprehensible scientific methods sections of research articles. Once I took the first of many statistics courses, I was hooked.
What do you consider your dream job?
My dream job is to act as a liaison between traditional quantitative methods core/biostatistics department leaders and nursing science faculty, as a content expert in nursing science with a PhD in nursing epidemiology, and as an expert in epidemiological methods. I would like to serve as consultant faculty to other nurse researchers around the world and help them understand how to best apply complex statistical methods to their research and evaluate them.
What do you hope understanding statistics and/or data science helps you accomplish?
I am primarily interested in the application of statistics and data science methods as they pertain to my own and others’ research within nursing science. We have more than 3 million nurses in the US (roughly six times the number of physicians), and 1% have a doctoral degree and conduct some form of research or lead quality improvement initiatives. Also, virtually all US medical care is administered through nurses. So, how much of ‘biomedical’ outcomes are actually nursing outcomes—which are never studied from a nursing perspective—remains to be seen. Yet, nurse scientists do not feel comfortable, generally, with quantitative methods. As a unique scientist in nursing with expertise in epidemiological methods, my goal is to use statistical methods and data science knowledge to arm nurse researchers with the tools to advance the knowledge of health care in nursing.
Is there a particular group of statisticians you would like to reach out to you (e.g., from a section, interest group, chapter, committee)?
I would be open to contact from any statistician, frankly. That said, given my interests, I feel anyone using biostatistical methods to study health care or epidemiologists developing statistical methods for epidemiological questions would be right up my alley.
What is your favorite hobby?
My husband and I enjoy working out together consistently and doing outdoor activities such as hiking or cycling.
What is something you would like people to know about you that we haven’t asked?
I am the host of the first and only methodology-based podcast in nursing science, called Clinical Appraisal, which now has listeners in more than 62 countries. I discuss not only papers in nursing but methods and measurement in nursing science per se, as well as interview nurse scientists and others.
