Don Jang, chair of the American Statistical Association’s Survey Research Methods Section, led the section through another year of activities in 2024.
In 2025, Eric Rancourt, section chair, wishes to continue to focus on students and new members. Additionally, he thinks that, given the increased difficulty in getting high response rate in surveys, alternative approaches must be integrated into survey designs with more vigor, but not in ways that would push survey statistics outside a valid inferential framework.
This approach prompts several questions for the section and its executive team for the year ahead: How should surveys be designed, if it is known there will be high nonresponse rates and, further, that this nonresponse will effectively have an impact on estimates? How should statisticians further develop inference from nonprobabilistically obtained samples and data sets? How should statisticians soundly emphasize the use of machine learning and AI?
