The American Statistical Association announces the establishment of the Douglas A. Zahn Grant for Advancing Interpersonal Excellence, a $2,500 annual award recognizing individuals who advance interpersonal skills among statisticians and data scientists.
Named in memory of Douglas Zahn, professor of statistics at Florida State University and a pioneer in statistical consulting education, this grant honors his legacy of emphasizing the human side of statistical work. Zahn coauthored The Human Side of Statistical Consulting and was the first recipient of both the ASA W.J. Dixon Award and ASA Mentoring Award.
Eligible applicants include statistical consulting instructors, statistics educators, consulting center directors, professional consultants, and students committed to enhancing interpersonal competencies in statistics. Applications are welcome through March 15 and require the following:
- Letter of nomination/application
- 1–2 supporting letters demonstrating commitment to improving interpersonal relationships
- CV
- Three-page proposal outlining activities to be funded
- Additional supporting materials (optional)
Selection criteria emphasize both the merit of proposed activities and evidence of ongoing commitment to interpersonal excellence. Preference will be given to plans incorporating empirical evidence for improving interpersonal practices.
Recipients must submit a progress report within 12 months describing completed work, impacts, outcomes, and key learnings.
