Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month has been celebrated since 2017, evolving from Mathematics Awareness Month, which itself grew out of Mathematics Awareness Week, established in 1986.
The initiative was first proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan, who highlighted the critical role of mathematics in various fields, stating:
Despite the increasing importance of mathematics to the progress of our economy and society, enrollment in mathematics programs has been declining at all levels of the American educational system. Yet the application of mathematics is indispensable in such diverse fields as medicine, computer sciences, space exploration, the skilled trades, business, defense, and government. To help encourage the study and utilization of mathematics, it is appropriate that all Americans be reminded of the importance of this basic branch of science to our daily lives.

MSAM aims to increase public awareness and appreciation of mathematics and statistics, with an emphasis on recognizing the unique contributions of the statistics discipline.
ASA’s Initiatives for MSAM
This year, the American Statistical Association is taking the lead with an array of activities and resources, including the following:
- A dedicated website celebrating mathematics and statistics
- A free poster featured in this issue, aligned with this year’s theme—Math and Stats: AI’s Essential Ingredients
- Publicity tips to help spread awareness
- Lesson plans for educators to integrate mathematics and statistics activities into their classrooms
Additionally, ASA members Sarah Pagni, Shruti Jain, and Matthew Finkelman have once again organized the Predict 5 contest. Participants make predictions on five questions related to events occurring in April. Although the prediction phase has ended, you can still follow along, with winners announced in early May.
Get Involved
We encourage community members to celebrate MSAM by organizing their own events, such as the following:
- Workshops on real-world applications of mathematics and statistics
- Competitions to challenge problem-solving skills
- Exhibits and lectures featuring professionals in the field
- Creative activities such as designing math-related memes or Zoom backgrounds
