The eighth annual Symposium on Data Science and Statistics in slated for Salt Lake City, Utah, April 29 – May 2. SDSS provides a unique opportunity for data scientists, computer scientists, and statisticians to come together and exchange ideas. This year, the theme is “Bridging Disciplines: Advancing AI, Statistics, and Data Science Together.”
The program includes sessions on AI, large language models, sports, health, education, community, software and technology, and practice and applications—all connected to data science, statistics, computer science, and related fields.
Register via mail by April 14. Online registration will remain open through the end of the conference.
Salt Lake City is home to an AI community, restaurants, and art. And, of course, hiking and skiing are nearby. There are opportunities to meet your colleagues and friends during SDSS short courses, receptions and breakfasts, e-poster sessions, and mentoring. Students are encouraged to attend, as there are opportunities planned for them to meet each other. In addition, students can take advantage of speed mentoring and/or a 1:1 mentor pairing.
On Tuesday, April 29, the following five short courses are planned:
- Time Series Applications with a Machine Learning Framework (full day)
- Introduction to Interpretable Machine Learning Using SHAP, GINI, and LIME (half day)
- Integrating Large Language Models in Introductory Data Science Courses (half day)
- Building Containerized Applications for Data Science (half day)
- Accelerating Data Science Workflows with Kubernetes (half day)
The three-day conference will start on Wednesday, April 30. Every morning, attendees will come together for breakfast, followed by sessions with speakers who will expand their horizons:
- On April 30, Julia Silge, data scientist and engineering manager at Posit PBC (formerly RStudio) will speak on Introducing Positron, a next-generation IDE for data science.
- On May 1, a panel discussion, “AI and Large Language Models—What Is the Impact on Students’ Statistical Education and Research?” is planned with Judith Canner of Cal State Monterey Bay, Jimmy Doi of Cal Poly, and Karl Pazdernik of the Pacific Northwest National Lab and North Carolina State University.
- On May 2, Shane Reese, ASA Fellow and president of Brigham Young University, will give a talk titled “Leadership Through a Stochastic Lens.”
In addition, there will be two-part lightning sessions, during which each speaker gives a five-minute overview of their work followed by an e-poster session for a more in-depth discussion.
SDSS also offers sponsorship opportunities.
