Fanni Natanegara, JSM 2027 Program Chair
It’s time to shape the program for the 2027 Joint Statistical Meetings—to be held in Chicago, Illinois, from August 8–12—by submitting invited session proposals. ASA President-Elect Brian Millen set the JSM 2027 theme to be “People Powered. Science Driven. Future Ready.” Sessions connected to this theme are encouraged, but all proposals that reflect the breadth of statistics and data science are welcome.
Invited Paper and Panel Sessions
Invited sessions can be structured as paper sessions, typically two to six speakers and/or discussants presenting research under a unified theme, or panel discussions, in which three to six participants engage in commentary and debate on a topic of contemporary interest.
To organize a session, start by identifying a unifying theme of broad interest, then reach out to potential participants to confirm their availability. JSM enforces a strict “one speaker, one session” rule—an individual can only present in one invited session—so it’s worth having these conversations early. Once your proposal is ready, submit it through the online system available August 19 through September 23, indicating the session type and proposed sponsoring organization.
It’s a good idea to connect with the relevant ASA section or partner society representative before submitting. Sections have guaranteed allocation slots and can also enter proposals into a general competitive pool for program committee review. All proposals must be submitted via the online system, however.
Decisions about the invited program will be made by mid-October.
Memorial Sessions
JSM 2027 will reserve space for five invited memorial sessions honoring colleagues who have shaped the field. To be considered, submit your proposal through the standard invited session process, selecting “memorial session” as a sponsor while also identifying ASA section co-sponsors. Memorial sessions not selected through a section’s guaranteed slots or the general competitive pool will be evaluated for the designated memorial slots later in the fall.
Invited Poster Sessions
An invited poster session consisting of up to 40 electronic posters will be held during the Opening Mixer on the Sunday of JSM 2027. Direct your ideas and poster submissions to JSM 2027 Poster Chair Lan Xue.
Introductory Overview Lectures
Introductory Overview Lectures are sessions designed to enrich the future direction of statistical theory and practice through broad dissemination. JSM 2027 will feature four IOLs. These sessions should address timely, forward-looking topics with wide appeal across the JSM audience. IOL speakers are exempt from the “one speaker, one session” rule. Send your topic and speaker suggestions directly JSM Program Chair Fanny Natanegara.
