Scott Vander Wiel and Janet Myhre have been honored with the section’s Distinguished Achievement Award for 2020 and 2021. The award recognizes an outstanding accomplishment or sustained contribution at the intersection of the statistical profession and national defense.

As part of the section’s speaker program, Laura Freeman traveled to the United States Military Academy at West Point to brief staff and faculty on statistical methods in test and evaluation within the Department of Defense.

DATAWorks 2018 Focuses on Rigorous Statistical Approaches in Defense and Aerospace
The ASA’s Section on Statistics in Defense and National Security sponsored an inaugural Defense and Aerospace Test and Analysis Workshop (DATAWorks) March 20–22. Analysts from across the Department of Defense and NASA met with leading academics, shared best practices, and gained new ideas.

Alyson Wilson Speaks at Smith College
Alyson Wilson, a professor in the department of statistics at North Carolina State University, spoke about her work on assessing system reliability for complex U.S. Department of Defense systems and the application of data science to problems in the intelligence community at Smith College on March 31 as part of the Statistics in National Defense and Security Speakers Program.
