In NSF Corner, working group members seek to support NSF’s work to advance statistics and data science research and work with the ASA community to identify and communicate ASA priorities to NSF.

Yong Zeng of the University of Missouri-Kansas City became a permanent program director and Jun Zhu of the University of Wisconsin-Madison became a rotator program director of the Division of Mathematical Sciences in the National Science Foundation Directorate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences this fall.

Administration Releases FY23 Budget Request as Congress Finalizes FY22 Budget

Congress wrapped up its funding for the federal government for fiscal year 2022 in March, the sixth month of the fiscal year. With the Biden administration releasing its fiscal year 2023 within a few weeks, Congress had to almost immediately start the process again. The National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation both received 4 percent increases. Several statistical agencies also received 3–6 percent increases.

Big Tent for Statistics and Data Science

Rhonda followed in her father’s footsteps and earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics. After a family friend told her about this ‘new’ field called biostatistics, she propelled her journey forward and became the second African American to complete her PhD in biostatistics from Virginia Commonwealth University. Rhonda has received many awards and accolades as a tenured professor, but she is most proud of the relationships she has formed with her students and the impact she has made on their lives.
