Student Travel Grants for JSM 2011
The section will offer up to five travel awards of $400 for students enrolled in a graduate program with a concentration in applied statistics and/or quality management to attend the Joint Statistical Meetings in Miami Beach, Florida, from July 30 to August 4. The student must have a demonstrated interest in quality applications, as evidenced by course work, research topic, or work experience. Applicants either presenting a paper or participating in a poster session will receive extra consideration. Contact Theresa Utlaut at theresa.l.utlaut@intel.com with questions or to request an application. Applications will be accepted February 1 through March 31.
55th Annual Fall Technical Conference
Mark your calendars now to attend the 55th Annual Fall Technical Conference, to be held October 13–14 in Kansas City, Missouri. Cosponsored by ASQ’s CPID and Statistics divisions and the ASA’s Q&P and SPES sections, FTC is a forum for engaging researchers and practitioners in a dialogue that leads to more effective use of statistics to improve quality. If you are interested in presenting an applied or expository paper, download the instructions (PDF download) or contact Theresa Utlaut at theresa.l.utlaut@intel.com. The abstract submission deadline is February 28.
Happy New Year! What a great 2010 we had in the Quality and Productivity Section, and there are a lot of hard-working Q&P section members and officers to thank for it. Sometimes, we don’t realize the time and effort required to successfully carry out the activities and mission of the section, including multiple conferences, mixers, webinars, newsletter and Amstat News articles, web pages, student scholarships and grants, student competitions, the section budget, officer nominations, Fellow nominations, continuing education and short courses, etc. The list goes on. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make 2010 a great year.
There is much to look forward to in 2011. Q&P is sponsoring a student competition, in which student teams are invited to use their statistical and Six Sigma skills to improve a process. The winning team will receive $500 and travel funding up to $1000 per student for up to three students to present their project at the 2011 Joint Statistical Meetings in Miami Beach, Florida, this August. Statistics students represent the future of the ASA and our profession. It is important to help students as much as possible to become involved in the ASA and the Q&P section. Accordingly, Q&P is offering up to five student grants to attend JSM 2011. And, as usual, we will continue to award the Mary G. and Joseph Natrella Scholarship and other student travel scholarships in conjunction with the annual Quality & Productivity Research Conference (QPRC). This year, the QPRC will be hosted by Virginia Tech in Roanoke, Virginia, from June 7–10.
The 55th Annual Fall Technical Conference (FTC) will be held in Kansas City, Missouri, from October 13–14. I would like to express my thanks to all who have worked hard (and will continue to work hard) in carrying out this and other important conferences.
Last, I would like to thank all the members of the Q&P executive committee for their excellent service in 2010. They have shown great dedication to their respective responsibilities and carried on the work and mission of the Q&P section wonderfully. I look forward to serving among you in 2011.
