Survey Research Methods Reports on Past, Upcoming Meetings

The Survey Research Methods Section (SRMS) had its public business meeting August 3 in Washington, DC—the first in-person section meeting since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hosted by section chair Jean Opsomer, the meeting allowed those who attended the opportunity to meet with the current officers and brought together survey researchers in an informal setting.

At the time of JSM 2022, SRMS had 1,142 members, including 399 student members. The section is in good financial shape, as reported by treasurer Jessica Kohlschmidt. Our account balance is in the ASA target zone of two to three times our annual expenses.

Section chair-elect Brady West emphasized that SRMS members have free access to all the past American Association for Public Opinion Research webinars as a benefit of membership.

Council of Sections representative Stas Kolenikov mentioned he will be collecting ideas and comments about ASA and SRMS activities. Questions he is seeking answers for are the following:

  • Should job postings be removed from section postings and organized as part of a single larger list advertised by the ASA?
  • Is it a good idea for the Text Analysis Interest Group to become a section?
  • What are thoughts about increasing the section’s membership?
  • Who should the section put forward to receive the Outstanding Section Service Award in 2023?

During JSM 2022, SRMS sponsored or cosponsored four invited sessions, nine topic-contributed sessions, seven contributed sessions, one poster session, and four roundtable discussions.

At our business meeting, we recognized Pushpal Mukhopadhyay with the Outstanding Section Service Award and Paul Beatty with the Social Statistics Section Outstanding Section Service Award, both from 2020 when the conference was held virtually. We also celebrated the SRMS Student Travel Award winners, the GSS/SRMS/SSS Student Paper Award winners, and the four SRMS members who became fellows: Brady West of the University of Michigan; Jose Zubizarreta of Harvard Medical School; Kelly McConville of Harvard University; and Megan Price of the Human Rights Data Analysis Group.

Additionally, three book raffles took place and books from Springer, CRC, and SAS covering a wide range of topics in statistics were given away.

Besides these Amstat News articles, look for section news in the January and July SRMS newsletters in preparation for JSM 2023 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, August 5–10. Also, look for the 2021 JSM Proceedings to appear on our website next year (in addition to all proceedings papers going back to 1958) and make plans to attend our SRMS business meeting in Toronto.

Finally, the section is co-sponsoring the BigSurv23 “Big Data Meets Survey Science” conference in Quito, Ecuador, October 26–29, 2023, so look out for that opportunity, as well.
