Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies Honors Top Statisticians
The Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies honored four statisticians at the 2023 Joint Statistical Meetings in Toronto, Canada, on August 9. These awards are jointly sponsored by the COPSS founding partner members: American Statistical Association; Institute of Mathematical Statistics; Eastern and Western regions of the International Biometric Society; and Statistical Society of Canada.
Daniela Witten Wins COPSS Presidents’ Award
Daniela Witten is a professor of statistics and biostatistics at the University of Washington and the Dorothy Gilford Endowed Chair in Mathematical Statistics. She develops statistical machine learning methods for high-dimensional data.

Jeffrey T. Leek Wins COPSS Presidents’ Award
The COPSS Presidents’ Award citation recognized Leek for influential work addressing high-dimensional data; for development of empirical tools for data science as a science with applications to meta-research, reproducibility, and replicability; for scaling (bio)statistics-centered data science education to millions of people worldwide; and for leveraging data science tools, educational technologies, and community partnerships to create economic opportunities in under-served communities.
COPSS Honors 13 with Awards
The Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS) presents awards annually to honor statisticians who have made outstanding contributions to the profession. For 2021, COPSS awards were presented at the Joint Statistical Meetings on August 11 by COPSS Chair Bhramar Mukherjee and the award committee members.
