Over the last month, the ASA GivesBack team asked members to submit ‘thank-you notes’ to a mentor who made a big difference for them. Here are some of the submissions received.
San Francisco Bay Area Chapter Holds K–12 Student Summer Project Program
The goal of the program is to provide students with mentoring from chapter officers and volunteers during student-designed projects.
Nell Sedransk
The ink was barely dry on Nell Sedransk’s PhD when she joined the department of surgery at the University of Wisconsin and assembled a clinical trials statistical center for cancer research. Spending time at the radiologist’s elbow, she learned the boundaries of a lung tumor are not sharp and distinct, exact repetition of an X-Ray is technically not possible, and the best in the world cannot measure without error. Later, she took research leadership appointments at the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) and National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS). At NIST, she became part of the multidisciplinary team overseeing modeling to determine the cause and process of the World Trade Center collapse. At NISS, she focused on research, mentoring, and program building. She has always wanted to keep learning; being a statistician has fulfilled that wish.
Government Statistics Matches Mentors with Mentees
Eleven mentor/mentee pairs were matched through the Government Statistics Section mentoring program. The mentoring committee is working with participants to produce a roundtable event to cycle the program in sync with the 2021–2022 academic year.

Diversity Mentoring Program Accepting Applications
Applications are being accepted for the JSM Diversity Mentoring Program, which brings minority graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and junior professionals together with senior-level statisticians and faculty in academia, government, and the private sector in a structured program during the Joint Statistical Meetings.
