Exciting Program Planned for JSM 2011
The Biometrics Section will sponsor two continuing education courses and six invited sessions during JSM 2011 in Miami Beach, Florida.
JSM Short Courses, Other Meetings Opportunities Announced
The Biometrics Section will sponsor two short courses during JSM 2011. The section also is looking for ideas for JSM 2012 and ENAR 2012.
New Strategic Initiative Shapes Up
The Biometrics Section is supporting a new initiative, titled “Raising Interest in Biostatistics Careers Among Miami High-School Students.” One component of the project is the development of an online “base” presentation that explains the biostatistics field, including the educational expectations and job opportunities. Another component involves classroom visits by volunteer speakers to selected Miami AP statistics and mathematics classes.
Section Introduces New Committee Members, Plans for JSM
The Biometrics Section introduces the members of the 2011 executive committee and solicits nominations for the Byar Young Investigator Award and travel awards.
JSM 2011 Invited Program Announced
The Biometrics Section outlines the invited sessions it will sponsor at JSM 2011 in Miami, Florida, and calls for contributed and topic-contributed abstracts. The sections awards also are announced.
Biometrics Section Deadlines, Awards, Transitions
The Biometrics Section reminds its members that the deadline to submit abstracts for the 2011 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) is February 1. Also, Tianxi Cai, 2011 JSM program chair, is collecting proposals for topic-contributed talks, and the section is seeking applications for the 2011 David P. Byar Young Investigator Award.
Meetings, Awards Highlight Section Activities
The Biometrics Section invites members to the upcoming Eastern North American Region (ENAR) Spring Meeting March 20–23, 2011, in Miami, Florida. Also, proposals for topic-contributed talks are being collected for JSM 2011. Finally, applications are being accepted for the 2011 David P. Byar Young Investigator Award.
Business Meeting Covers Much at JSM
The Biometrics section held its annual business committee meeting at JSM 2010 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Topics of discussion included work being done by Statistics Without Borders, how to get young people more involved with the ASA, planning for JSM 2011, continuing education, the David P. Byar award, the section’s finances, and representatives to the Council of Sections.
Byar Award Winners Announced
X. Jessie Jeng of the University of Pennsylvania was chosen as this year’s winner of the David P. Byar Young Investigator Award for “Optimal Sparse Segment Identification with Application in Copy Number Variation Analysis.” Jeng received $1,500 and a plaque.
