The ASA Business and Economic Statistics Section is pleased to announce that Edward Leamer will speak at the Economic Outlook Luncheon during the Joint Statistical Meetings in San Diego, California, on July 31.

B&E Offers Travel Awards

The Business and Economic Statistics Section (B&E) is offering up to two travel awards—roughly $350—for students in doctoral programs in business, economics, econometrics, statistics, or allied disciplines. The awards will help students attend the 2011 Joint Statistical Meetings, to be held in Miami Beach, Florida, from July 30 to August 4.

Focus Is on Sessions, Awards at JSM

Although attendance at JSM 2010 in Vancouver, BC, was expected to be less than JSM 2009 in Washington, DC, the Business and Economics Statistics Section was active. The section sponsored four invited sessions and many more topic-contributed sessions, which were well-attended, as well as contributed, poster, and panel sessions. Topics included Bayesian econometrics, forecasting, seasonal adjustment, benchmarking, and volatility estimation.

JSM in Washington Active for Section

JSM 2009 set a new attendance record of roughly 6,800, about 1,200 more than Denver and nearly 800 more than Seattle. The Business and Economic Statistics Section had an exceptionally active year, with 30 technical sessions, including many in the areas of econometrics and seasonal time series.
