Two Receive SDNS Distinguished Achievement Award

Scott Vander Wiel and Janet Myhre have been honored with the section’s Distinguished Achievement Award for 2020 and 2021. The award recognizes an outstanding accomplishment or sustained contribution at the intersection of the statistical profession and national defense.

Alyson G. Wilson’s interest in statistics grew out of a summer internship in the clinical statistics department of Burroughs Wellcome, a pharmaceutical company in North Carolina. This was the first time she understood how math could be applied to real-world problems. Today, she is a professor in the department of statistics and associate vice chancellor for national security and special research initiatives, and her work has contributed to improving the use of data and quantitative methods in defense.

The ASA’s Section on Statistics in Defense and National Security sponsored an inaugural Defense and Aerospace Test and Analysis Workshop (DATAWorks) March 20–22. Analysts from across the Department of Defense and NASA met with leading academics, shared best practices, and gained new ideas.

The Army Conference on Applied Statistics (ACAS) is pleased to announce that Arizona State University in Tempe will host its 15th annual meeting from October 21–23, 2009. ACAS is a conference of the Interface Foundation of North America and a leading forum for the presentation and discussion of theoretical and applied papers relating to the use of probability and statistics for solving defense- and security-related problems.
