Nominations Open for Health Science Awards
The Teaching of Statistics in the Health Sciences Section offers four annual awards: the Young Investigator Award for promising early-career educators or researchers; the Outstanding Teaching Award for excellence in statistics education; the Distinguished Achievement Award for longtime service to the section and ASA; and Best Contributed Paper at JSM Award. Nominations are open for three of them.
Introducing Our Newest Members: Spotlight on Apoorva Goyal
Apoorva Goyal’s interest in statistics and data science evolved gradually, influenced by a combination of academic experiences and the growing demand for data analytics in various fields. Today, her dream job involves combining her passion for genetics research with data science to drive innovations in precision medicine within a startup setting.
Charmaine B. Dean
Hailing from Trinidad and Tobago, Charmaine B. Dean’s academic journey was shaped by her mother’s emphasis on getting an education, even though her mother was prevented from getting one herself. Dean’s affinity for mathematics, and particularly statistics, flourished during her undergraduate years and aligned with her desire to make a tangible impact. Currently, she provides strategic direction in research, innovation, and international collaboration at the University of Waterloo. She considers her engagement in interdisciplinary research one of her greatest achievements, particularly her research in fire science, which has allowed her to collaborate with scientists, government agencies, and fire crews.
JEDI Corner: Promoting Diversity in Data Repository Research
The National Institutes of Health is investing resources in constructing secure data repositories in which researchers and community members are able to use publicly available data. One such program is the NIH’s All of Us Research Program, which has expanded its Researcher Workbench to include data contributed by more than 329,000 participants, about 80 percent of whom are from communities that have been historically underrepresented in biomedical research.
Clarice R. Weinberg
Clarice R. Weinberg was always good with numbers and earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics. However, she didn’t know what to do with her math degrees so she looked into statistics and eventually earned her PhD in biomathematics from the University of Washington. Now at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, she is active in breast cancer research and working with biostatistics graduate students to develop stochastic search methods to identify sets of gene variants and sets of exposures that synergistically influence risk.

Iowa State Student Wins Jackson Smith Scholarship
Sepideh Mosaferi, a PhD student in the department of statistics at Iowa State University, is the winner of the Government Statistics Section’s 2020 Wray Jackson Smith Scholarship.
