The Gertrude Cox 5k Race Winners
Michelle Quinlan was this year’s Gertrude Cox 5k fun run women’s winner, with a time of 20:41:00. The men’s winner was Joel O’Hair, with a time of 17:05:00. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the fun run, which takes place at the Joint Statistical Meetings.
Statisticians Honored for Contributions
The Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies presents awards annually to honor statisticians for their outstanding contributions and service to further the statistics field. Four awards were presented during the Joint Statistical Meetings on August 5.

Section Congratulates Awardees
During the section’s business meeting and mixer at JSM, Gretchen Moisen, section chair, presented the JSM Presentation Award, Young Investigator Award, and Distinguished Achievement Award.

The Statistics in Epidemiology section congratulates the winners of the Young Investigator Award and student travel awards.
First Risk Analysis Mixer a Success
For the first time, the Section on Risk Analysis jointly sponsored a mixer with the Section on Statistics in Defense and National Security at JSM. The event was successful, attracting 50 members from the two sections. Highlights included presentations of awards, discussion of future plans, and a prize raffle where many of those present won books, software, and vouchers.
JSM in Washington Active for Section
JSM 2009 set a new attendance record of roughly 6,800, about 1,200 more than Denver and nearly 800 more than Seattle. The Business and Economic Statistics Section had an exceptionally active year, with 30 technical sessions, including many in the areas of econometrics and seasonal time series.
Business Meeting Covers Much Ground
The Biometrics Section recently held its annual business committee meeting during JSM in Washington, DC. Dan Heitjan, 2009 section chair, welcomed members and guests and introduced Steve Pierson, the ASA’s director of science policy. Pierson described efforts to develop a series of one-page documents for policymakers called “Statistical Significance” that underscore significant contributions statisticians have made in key areas such as health care, economic productivity, and national security. Pierson said he views his role, in part, as educating the ASA membership about ways to influence science policy and invited suggestions for ASA science policy action from section members.
