Common Core State Standards for Mathematics include much more statistics content than previous standards, especially at the middle- and secondary-school levels. To help prepare teachers to teach statistics, a member of the Ann Arbor Chapter developed a seminar called GAISEing into the Statistics Common Core.

Statistics Workshops for Math, Science Teachers Held in San Diego
The American Statistical Association sponsored the sixth Meeting Within a Meeting (MWM) statistics workshop for middle- and high-school mathematics and science teachers on July 31 and August 1 in conjunction with the 2012 Joint Statistical Meetings. Twenty-four high-school teachers and administrators and 13 middle-school teachers attended.
Beyond AP Statistics Workshop a Success
The American Statistical Association (ASA)/National Council of Teachers (NCTM) of Mathematics Joint Committee on Curriculum in Statistics and Probability sponsored a Beyond AP Statistics (BAPS) workshop during the annual Joint Statistical Meetings in Miami Beach, Florida, on August 3. This year, 25 teachers attended the full-day workshop, designed to strengthen and expand teachers’ statistics backgrounds.
Statistics Workshop for Math, Science Teachers Goes International
The American Statistical Association and Statistical Society of Canada jointly sponsored the fourth annual Meeting Within a Meeting (MWM) Statistics Workshop for Mathematics and Science Teachers that was held August 4–5 concurrently with the 2010 Joint Statistical Meetings in Vancouver, BC. Canadian and U.S. middle- and high-school teachers attended workshop sessions on August 4 and received passes to attend JSM sessions on August 5.
Statistics Workshop for Math and Science Teachers Goes International
The ASA’s Meeting Within a Meeting workshop that helps teachers meet current mathematics and science standards for teaching statistics will be held August 4-5 with the 2010 Joint Statistical Meetings and include a satellite workshop in conjunction with ICOTS in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Undergraduate Statistics Project Competition Announced
The Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics (CAUSE) has announced the third biennial Undergraduate Statistics Project Competition (USPROC). The purpose of the competition is to encourage the development of data analysis skills, to enhance presentation skills, and to recognize outstanding work by undergraduate statistics students. Cash prizes and a plaque will be provided to the top three winners.
Statistics Teachers Needed in Industrial Settings
It is widely assumed that you need a PhD in statistics to teach applied statistics in an industrial setting. However, many teaching jobs in industrial settings require only a master’s degree in statistics. A career as a statistical instructor can be rewarding, as you continually learn new statistical methods and obtain personal satisfaction knowing you are helping professionals solve problems.
Statistics Workshop for K–12 Teachers Goes to U.S. Census Bureau
The American Statistical Association held its third annual Meeting Within a Meeting (MWM) August 3–4, concurrently with the Joint Statistical Meetings in Washington, DC. Developed to help K–12 mathematics and science teachers meet current mathematics and science standards for teaching statistics, the program provides an opportunity for teachers to discuss and apply the statistical concepts and data analysis tools described in the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Report: A Pre-K–12 Curriculum Framework.
