North Carolina Chapter Organizes International Conference

1 December 2012 980 views No Comment

This past October, the North Carolina Chapter of the ASA organized the International Conference on Advances in Interdisciplinary Statistics and Combinatorics (AISC) at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The conference featured diverse academic sessions, including wild fires management, environment, anthropology, medicine, insurance, weather modeling, and network security. Highlighted were the research, teaching, and service contributions of many ASA members in North Carolina.

Before the evening reception, there was an open forum that generated new ways to strengthen the chapter, including a traveling statistics lecture series, switching the chapter website to the ASA website, and electing two vice presidents instead of one to ensure smoother transition of leadership. It also was decided that the chapter would organize an annual statistics symposium with universities and organizations in North Carolina. Also discussed was the possibility of regularly hosting a larger international conference.

The graduate student winners for best paper presentation awards are Thais Paiva, Kyle White, Sara Becker, and Archana Polisetti. Undergraduate student winners are Anna Tuck, Tracy Spears Gill, and Caitlin Ross. All awardees received a certificate, plaque, and cash award.

Visit the conference website for details and pictures of the event.
