This past October, the North Carolina Chapter of the ASA organized the International Conference on Advances in Interdisciplinary Statistics and Combinatorics at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The conference featured diverse academic sessions, including wild fires management, environment, anthropology, medicine, insurance, weather modeling, and network security. Highlighted were the research, teaching, and service contributions of many ASA members in North Carolina.

The National Institute of Justice and National Science Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding that establishes a framework for a partnership to leverage their respective strengths and resources. Under this memorandum, the two agencies will coordinate workshops and other educational and networking opportunities for their staffs and for researchers and practitioners in the field.

One of Marie Davidian’s initiatives as ASA president-elect is to increase the visibility of statisticians and their work, which she thinks can be done by strengthening ties with the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Read on to find out how.

Improve your programming skills, make connections, learn how statistics are used in daily life. The 2013 Joint Statistical Meetings will take place in Montréal, Québec, Canada, and the program committee is soliciting abstracts for topic-contributed and contributed papers, topic-contributed and contributed posters, and topic-contributed panel sessions. Submissions will be accepted until February 4.

A symposium in honor of Jack Kalbfleisch, “Methodologic Advances in the Analysis of Outcomes Data,” was held September 28–29 at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Approximately 160 celebrated Kalbfleisch’s contributions to statistics and service to the profession.
