A local chapter of the US national statistics honor society, Mu Sigma Rho (ΜΣΡ), was recently formed at the Department of Statistics at George Mason University. Ilhan M. Izmirli, who spearheaded the application process, will be the faculty representative.

ΜΣΡ was founded in 1968 at Iowa State University, also the first school to house a statistical laboratory, which was established by the well-known statistician George W. Snedecor in 1934. The following are the main goals of ΜΣΡ:

  • Promotion and encouragement of scholarly activities in statistics
  • Recognition of exceptional achievements among the students and faculty in eligible academic institutions
  • Advancement and reinforcement of intellectual accomplishments in the field

ΜΣΡ’s endeavors include outreach and professional services. The society-sponsored events are designed to involve undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and professional statisticians.
