John M. Abowd
John M. Abowd, professor emeritus at Cornell University and chief scientist of the United States Census Bureau (retired), received the Association for Computing Machinery Policy Award for transformative work in modernizing the US Census Bureau’s processing and dissemination of census and survey data, which serves as a model for privacy-aware management of government-collected data. Abowd’s work has transformed the government’s capacity to improve the accuracy and availability of vital statistical and data resources while enhancing citizens’ privacy.
The ACM Policy Award recognizes an individual or small group that makes a significant impact on the formation or execution of public policy affecting computing or the computing community. The award is accompanied by a $10,000 prize.
D. Anthony Miles
Principal statistician and researcher D. Anthony Miles and his research team won two best paper awards at the summer 2024 Academy of Business Research Conference. The Analytix Research Group won for their applied statistics research.
The two best paper awards were in the marketing sessions for the following papers:
- “Social Media Rating Sites and Consumer Behavior: A Nationwide Study on ‘Rate My Professors’ and Its Influence on College Students with Pre- and Post-Decisions in Consumer Behavior”
- “Predictive Analytics and the 2024 Presidential Election: A Study on Key Predictive Analytics and Candidate Attributes That Help Predict Results in the 2024 Presidential Election”

Frederick W. Faltin

Frederick W. Faltin of Virginia Tech was honored with the 2024 Gerald J. Hahn Quality and Productivity Achievement Award. Throughout his 40-year career, Faltin has made significant contributions as a researcher, consultant, author, and educator. He has successfully applied statistical quality and productivity methods across many problem domains, and through his publications and presentations, has promoted their use by others.
Faltin is best known for his work in process control, statistical process monitoring, and design of experiments. He is also know as a corporate research manager and international consultant. He was elected a fellow of the American Statistical Association in 2002.
Faltin was deeply involved in quality and productivity improvement across many of General Electric’s businesses and founded the data science laboratory at GE Research. After his career at GE, Faltin co-founded a consulting company that supported organizations around the world in domains ranging from manufacturing to financial services, health care, and corporate real estate.
Faltin has successfully promoted quality and productivity techniques through the publication of technical and non-technical papers and articles in refereed journals, magazines, and book chapters. He was co-editor of three books in applications of statistics, including the Encyclopedia of Statistics in Quality and Reliability.
Through the many professionals he has trained and mentored in courses, tutorials, and seminars, his work has delivered value to individuals’ careers and to product and process design and improvement of their employers.
Faltin’s ability to translate sophisticated statistical concepts into real-world applications nonstatistical operators and managers can understand and apply has been key to his impact. Methods Faltin developed and taught are now routinely used by practitioners around the globe.
Faltin currently serves as professor of practice in the department of statistics at Virginia Tech, where he teaches the theory and practice of data science in the computational modeling and data analytics curriculum. In this role, he is promoting awareness and use of statistics for organizational quality and productivity improvement to the next generation of professional data scientists.
The Gerald Hahn Award recipient will give the Q&P plenary address at the Fall Technical Conference. Nominations for the 2025 award will be open later in the year.
