ASA member Scott H. Holan has been selected to serve on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s study panel, “Foundation Models for Scientific Discovery and Innovation: Opportunities Across the Department of Energy.”
This consensus study will evaluate the state of foundation models and their potential applications across scientific research domains aligned with the US Department of Energy’s mission.
Holan is a professor of statistics and department chair at the University of Missouri and a senior research fellow in the Research and Methodology Directorate at the US Census Bureau. His research spans statistical and machine learning methodologies for dependent data (e.g., spatial, spatio-temporal, functional, and multivariate), Bayesian methods, environmental and ecological statistics, official statistics, and survey methodology. Holan is an elected fellow of the ASA and Institute of Mathematical Statistics and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. He holds a master’s in mathematics from the University of Illinois Chicago and a PhD in statistics from Texas A&M University.
