Highlights of the November 21–22, 2025, ASA Board of Directors Meeting

On Friday, November 21, 2025, ASA President Ji-Hyun Lee called to order the final 2025 meeting of the ASA Board of Directors. The board met at the ASA headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. The highlights of the board meeting follow.

Actions

The ASA Board of Directors did the following:

• Endorsed the Statistical Education of Teachers (SET II) report, subject to final review by the executive committee.
• Authorized staff to negotiate a lease for a new location for the ASA headquarters, pending the successful closure of the sale of the current building sometime in the first half of 2026.
• Approved a change to the ASA constitution and bylaws regarding election eligibility, requiring that an individual be a member of the association at the time elections begin to be eligible to vote in that election.
• Approved a change to the ASA bylaws regarding eligibility for selection as an ASA Fellow. The change, which will take effect in 2027, requires that an individual must have been a member for at least five of the last six years to be eligible for selection as a fellow.
• Approved a site for JSM 2030. The site will be announced soon, once final details have been completed.
• Approved updates to the ASA’s strategic plan based on the work of the board’s Strategic Plan Review Committee.
• Made changes to the composition of four committees to meet changing needs of the committees.
• Approved editor appointments for terms beginning in 2026 to the Journal of Nonparametric Statistics (Joan Jian-Jian Ren), the Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics (Rebecca Killick), and Statistics Surveys (Bertrand Clarke).
• Approved a revision to the JSM agreement, the document that governs the Joint Statistical Meetings, regarding invited sessions for partner societies. The proposed revision requires the approval of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Eastern North American Region and Western North American Region of the International Biometric Society, and Statistical Society of Canada before it would take effect.

Reports and Discussions

• The chairs and co-chairs of the Education Council and Professional Issues and Visibility Council presented the annual reports of these councils. The committee councils are the primary means by which the board stays connected with the committees. The annual reports allow the board to address pending issues and anticipate developing issues.
• A group of distinguished former federal statistical officials (William Beach, Shelly Martinez, and Jen Park) briefed the board on their work under ASA sponsorship to provide input to policymakers for how to strengthen the federal statistical system in the current policy environment.
• Robert Clayton, founder and CEO of the Sports Analytics Club Program, a nationally recognized initiative dedicated to advancing data science education and career development for under-resourced youth, updated the board on the growth in the program since he last spoke to the board five years ago.
• National Academies Senior Scholar Melissa Chiu updated the board on how reorganization at the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine has affected the Committee on National Statistics.
• Derek Curtis II, ASA director of finance and administration, updated the board on the status of the ASA’s finances as of September 30. He said the ASA’s financial results aligned with expectations and we anticipate a net positive result for 2025. He also reviewed the impact of the building sale on financials, noting it will contribute positively to the bottom line.
• Staff reported it had reviewed the 2026 budget approved in August. The review was based on the third quarter financial report. No significant change to the previously approved budget was needed.
• Amanda Malloy, ASA director of development, reported on the results of ASA Giving Day. She also updated the board on fundraising for 2025, highlighting two estate gifts that will help support ASA programs.
• Lee updated the board on several projects in different stages of development, including the Nature Medicine Statistical Advisory Panel, StatsForward, and a clinical trials certificate program.
• President-Elect Jeri Mulrow is launching Communities in Action, focused on connecting ASA communities with external partners. The vision of the program is to empower ASA communities to raise the profile of the practice and profession and share their expertise with partner communities to foster informed decisions.
• Past President Bonnie Ghosh-Dastidar highlighted the successful launch of the Dionne Price Public Lecture and the ongoing development of mentoring programs and strategies.
• The board conducted its periodic review and update of the “Board Roles and Responsibilities” document.
