Estelle Bee Dagum was an elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association and a pioneering statistician, whose work transformed the practice of official statistics and time-series analysis across the globe.
She became best known for her foundational contributions to seasonal adjustment methods, particularly the development and refinement of the widely used X-11 ARIMA technique. Her innovations provided governments, central banks, and researchers with more accurate tools to interpret economic data, enabling clearer insights into trends underlying complex seasonal patterns.
Born in Argentina and later establishing her career in Canada, Dagum combined intellectual rigor with a deep commitment to public service. At Statistics Canada, she led methodological advancements that became international standards, shaping how economic indicators such as employment, inflation, and production are analyzed and reported. Her work emphasized both theoretical precision and practical applicability, bridging the gap between academic statistics and real-world decision-making. In her later years, she served as a professor at the University of Bologna, where she continued to teach, mentor, and contribute to advancing statistical science.

Among her most notable publications are Benchmarking, Temporal Distribution, and Reconciliation Methods for Time Series and Seasonal Adjustment Methods and Real Time Trend-Cycle Estimation. Her writing was distinguished by clarity, rigor, and a consistent emphasis on real-world applicability.
Dagum was also a dedicated mentor and educator. Her presence at major conferences, including the Joint Statistical Meetings, remained influential well into the later years of her life, reflecting her enduring curiosity and engagement with evolving methodologies.
Beyond her technical achievements, Dagum was widely recognized for her leadership and her role in elevating the global statistical community. Among her many honors were the inaugural Julius Shiskin Memorial Award for Economic Statistics, becoming an elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association, becoming an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, and receiving an honorary doctorate from Parthenope University of Naples, acknowledging both her scientific contributions and service to the profession. She shared her life with her lifelong partner, Camilo Dagum, a distinguished economist known for his influential work on income distribution and economic inequality.
