ASA member Guillermina (Willie) Jasso was named the recipient of the 2026 Cooley-Mead Award for Distinguished Scholarship. The award has been presented annually since 1978 by the Social Psychology Section of the American Sociological Association. It recognizes outstanding contributions to social psychology, where Jasso’s work has had a lasting impact.
In August, Jasso will deliver the Cooley-Mead Award Address at the annual meetings of the American Sociological Association in New York.
David Melamed, professor of sociology and member of the American Sociological Association, praised Jasso’s wide-ranging influence in the association’s newsletter, Reflected Apprisals. “Willie has made many contributions to our field,” wrote Melamed. “Within our community, her work on justice and status processes is particularly notable. She has contributed to other areas of the field, including methodology—particularly for her work on factorial survey methods and research on stratification and demography.”
Melamed also highlighted the broader significance of her scholarship, noting her work on exponential distributions has been especially generative. “Like many of you, I look forward to her Cooley-Mead address this August,” he added.
Jasso’s award lecture will be introduced by fellow Cooley-Mead Award recipient Murray Webster Jr., her former teacher, co-author, and longtime colleague.
