Meet New Member: Brie Coyne

September 1, 2026 Leave a Comment

This month, we spotlight Brie Coyne, a biostatistics student who answered a few questions so we could get to know her better.

How did you become interested in statistics and/or data science?

I have a very convoluted educational background. I started off as an English major who hated anything with numbers until I read Love and Math by Edward Frenkel. That book completely changed my view on math, and I switched majors almost immediately. In my sophomore year of college, one of the physics professors took me on as a student to use Maxwell’s equations to model a solar dynamo wave. I thought it was really cool how you could use math to predict the future, and my interest in mathematical modeling led me to statistics.

Unfortunately, I developed a disability that completely derailed my undergraduate studies. I switched majors from math to science communications, and I’ve been in some form of writing-adjacent job since. However, now that I’ve gotten the disability under control again, I’ve enrolled in graduate school. I’m finishing up a certificate in epidemiology, and now, I’m applying to biostatistics programs.

What do you consider your dream job?

Anything that lets me use my love of math, statistics, and coding to further human welfare.

What do you hope understanding statistics and/or data science helps you accomplish?

My sister and I have the same disability, but her outcome was much worse. I’m hoping that by becoming a biostatistician, I can meaningfully contribute to research that predicts and prevents negative health outcomes (particularly with psychiatric disabilities).

Is there a particular group of statisticians you would like to reach out to you (e.g., from a section, interest group, chapter, committee)?

I’d love to connect with others interested in mental health or statistical epidemiology.

What is your favorite hobby?

I make content for video games! I usually make quests and design levels/environments. It’s a very collaborative hobby and a great way to meet new people with common interests.

What is something you would like people to know about you that we haven’t asked?

I have a mini schnauzer and a cat! They get along great.
