George C. Tiao, a giant of modern statistics and beloved leader of the international statistical community, passed away peacefully in his sleep in Chicago on April 25, 2026, at the age of 92.

Kobi Abayomi
Kobi Abayomi once dreamed of becoming a physicist, but switched majors after he took his first class in statistics at Georgia Institute of Technology. Today, is head of science for Gumbel Demand Acceleration—a Software as a Service (SaaS) company for digital media—and Betaside Recordings, both data science startups at the intersection of demand and supply curves for musicians, artists, and music listeners. He also holds an appointment at Seton Hall University, where he teaches in the undergraduate and master’s in data science program.
Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics Comes with $1M Award, Recognition
The King Baudouin Foundation—a large public utility foundation in Belgium—recently established the Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics, which comes with a $1 million award. Nominations will be accepted until March 31.
Richard L. Anderson
Dick coauthored the well-known book, Statistical Theory in Research, one of the first books on linear models published. His research topics varied greatly. Early in his career, he published articles on econometrics. He was an expert on regression topics and he advanced the variance component estimation topic significantly.
Workshop on New Developments in Econometrics and Time Series
The Collaborative Research Center, “Statistical Modelling of Nonlinear Dynamic Processes,” is organizing an international workshop, titled “New Developments in Econometrics and Time Series,” to be held in Rome September 10–11.
