This October, the Georgia Institute of Technology welcomed more than 150 statisticians and data scientists for Georgia Statistics Day 2023, an annual symposium started in 2015 by professor Jeff Wu with the aim of promoting interdisciplinary statistics research among Georgia’s academic institutions.

SRCOS Advances Statistics, Biostatistics with Summer Research Conference
The Southern Regional Council on Statistics Summer Research Conference was created to fulfill the need for a small gathering of statisticians and biostatisticians in the US’s southern region. The 60th conference will take place in June 2025 at Villas by the Sea resort on Jekyll Island, Georgia.
Felicia R. Simpson
Felicia R. Simpson has enjoyed mathematics since she was in elementary school but was inspired to study biostatistics by her mentor, Zephyrinus Okonkwo. She loved the idea of combining mathematics and helping people. She wanted to study biostatistics to understand health disparities from a statistical point of view, especially after losing her mother to a stroke. After earning her PhD in biostatistics, Simpson she started her career at the FDA but transitioned to teaching because she wanted to expose under-represented students to statistics and biostatistics. She is currently an associate professor of statistics and chair in the department of mathematics at Winston-Salem State University.

Michael Thomas noticed at a young age he excelled in his math courses. He remembers while in high school picking from sheets with example exam questions the one with equations on it, because it seemed the shortest. This year, he helped plan and host StatFest 2020. He has been involved in mentorship, tutoring, and career-development conferences for students since he was an undergraduate and is currently pursuing a PhD in computational science and engineering focused on civil and environmental engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
