Susan Murphy Wins Boston Chapter’s Top Award
Congratulations to Susan Murphy, the 2024 recipient of the Boston Chapter’s Mosteller Statistician of the Year Award. She was recognized for her groundbreaking research, which focuses on improving sequential decision-making in health—currently in online, real-time learning algorithms for developing personalized digital health interventions.

The day featured a full program, including a tribute video from former colleagues and students; an interview with professor Xiao-Li Meng; and research presentations from professor emeritus Joseph (Jay) Kadane of Carnegie Mellon University, professor Tian Zheng of Columbia University, and professor Joseph Gastwirth of The George Washington University.

Nan Laird Honored with International Prize in Statistics

Scarlett Bellamy
Scarlett Bellamy grew up on her grandparent’s tobacco farm, learning how to drive a tractor when she was just five years old. This experience shaped her work ethic. Moreover, when her grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer, Bellamy promised she would become a doctor so she could “fix” her. Ultimately, Bellamy earned her PhD in biostatistics from Harvard and although it wasn’t the type of doctor who could fix her grandmother, she did fulfill her promise. Today, Bellamy is a professor of biostatistics and associate dean for diversity, inclusion, and faculty development at Drexel University.
Hal Stern Appointed UCI Vice Provost for Academic Planning
Hal S. Stern, longtime member of the ASA, has been appointed vice provost for academic planning at the University of California, Irvine.
Francesca Dominici
Francesca Dominici always loved mathematics and probability, but statistics was love at first sight because she could become an expert in different fields as long as there was data. Her studies have directly and routinely affected air quality policy and led to more stringent ambient air quality standards in the United States. For her contributions, she has earned the Janet Norwood Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Woman in the Statistical Sciences.
Marie Davidian
Having received very theoretical training at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Davidian learned through “trial by fire” how to be an effective applied statistician-collaborator. Her first book, Nonlinear Models for Repeated Measurement Data, co-authored with David Giltinan, is considered a seminal text on nonlinear mixed effects modeling and pharmacokinetic analysis.
