Trevor Hastie, Martin Wainwright Honored at Penn State

The Penn State Department of Statistics hosted the 2025 Rao Prize Conference on May 20 to recognize leading contributors to the statistics field. Among the honorees were Trevor Hastie, recipient of the 2025 C. R. and Bhargavi Rao Prize, and Martin Wainwright, the 2025 P. R. Krishnaiah Lecturer.

Elena Grewal’s journey began in New Haven, Connecticut, where the stark contrast between her public elementary school and elite private high school ignited her passion for addressing inequality. Studying ethics, politics, and economics at Yale, she sought solutions through public policy before discovering the power of data while pursuing a PhD at Stanford.

Nancy Reid initially intended to become a computer scientist because it was rumored to be the “future.” Instead, during her undergraduate years, she discovered she enjoyed statistics. She went on to pursue an MSc at the University of British Columbia, after which she expected to find a ‘real job.’ However, when she did her research thesis, she became hooked on research. In fact, the research environment was so exciting to her she has dedicated her entire career to academia. Still, Reid said she values the influence she has on her students the most.
